District 5 Petition Campaign

Word on the street is that 1000 signatures would bring Chris Murphy around to supporting the Department of Peace by becoming a co-sponsor of HR 808.

Please join the call for a Department of Peace by signing the District 5 Petition.

But don't stop there. Spread the word to friends and family and ask them to sign the petition as well.

On July 26th it was announced that Congressman John Larson of Connecticut's 1st district has become a co-sponsor of HR 808, the bill to establish a US Department of Peace and Non-Violence. This brings the number of co-sponsors to 68.

Peace should have place at table

   Letters to the Editor
   Danbury News-Times

I want to thank Dirk Perrefort for his May 13 article, Apple Pie Activism: Hoping to establish a Department of Peace .

Across the country, congressional representatives and senators met with citizens continuing the dialogue about establishing a Department of Peace. Last week, two new co-sponsors signed on in support of the bill, Rep. Maurice D. Hinchey, D-N.Y., and Rep. Michael R. McNulty, D-N.Y.

The Peace Alliance's stance is not anti-war or anti-military: It is pro-peace. We are asking that there be a secretary of Peace seated next to the secretary of Defense when the president of the United States calls his Cabinet together to discuss and create policy around issues of conflict.

Imagine if such a concept had been in place four years ago.

Our world is shifting consciously as technology bridges borders, environmental awareness expands, and we embrace the truth that peace is as much a process as it is a goal, and our government needs to do the same.

This bill gives peace a substantial voice in both the international and domestic policy of our government.

A U.S. Department of Peace would focus nationally on issues such as domestic violence, gang violence and bullying, making available to everyone the proven best practices to deal with these escalating issues. The time has come for our nation to become one of the world's leaders in peace.

Please join us in making this happen.

Peace Wants a Piece of the Pie

On Thursday May 10, 2007 members of Connecticut district 5 visited district representative Chris Murphy's office in New Britain, CT to deliver pies as part of a nationwide Mother's Day* campaign calling upon our senators and representatives to support a bill to create a US Department of Peace.

Four pies were delivered to the office along with our call for support. The cost of violence is enormous. The potential return on a small investment in peace can hardly be underestimated. We discussed the benefits of a US Department of Peace for close to an hour with case manager DG who recieved us graciously. The discussion was fruitful, however, Chris Murphy is not ready to sponsor the bill and thus we must work harder to spead the news and let Chris know that a Department of Peace is something his constituents expect him to support.

* Mother's Day was in part inspired by Julia Ward Howe, who nursed the wounded during the American Civil War, and also wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic. In 1870 she started a crusade to institute a Mother's Day as a Day for Peace. Click here to read her Mother's Day proclamation.
